INSECT PEST CONTROL
Residential and Commercial Properties can be plagued with these insects.
Little Black Ants ( Monomorium minimum) mostly forage in the Blue Palo Verde tree or on the ground. They prey on small insects. They carry a sting but are too small to inflict it upon a human.
Red Imported Red Fire Ants (Solenopsis invicta) and Southern Fire Ants (Solenopsis xyloni). The Arizona Department of Agriculture has been successful at keeping the Red Imported Red Fire Ants controled by eradication.
Southern Fire Ant don’t usually cause much harm. unless it becomes very hot or very cold and then they may move indoors.
Both ants will sting, however the Red Imported variety is highly aggressive.
The Maricopa harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex maricopa) plays a major role in decomposition by dragging dead carcasses of insects underground, thereby enriching soil for plants and crops. It has the most toxic insect venom known. It bites and then repeatedly stings.
Carpenter Ants (Camponotus spp.) They tunnel in the wood of stumps, logs, dead standing trees, the interior dead sections of livings trees, and the wooden portions of buildings. The wood borings, which are coarse and fibrous, are pushed out of the tunnels and may accumulate at the base of inhabited trees. They do not eat the wood, but seriously cause structural damage. They prefer wood that has been damaged by something else, usually water – although carpenter ants will often take over some other kind of damage – such as old termite damage. They do not sting.
The common carpet beetle doesn’t bite or sting, but can cause dermatitis where it has walked across human skin. Common carpet beetles can fly and can infest homes from spring through the early fall. Most infestations, are brought into residences via contaminated foodstuffs such as dried pet food, seeds, grains, cereals, woolen rugs/clothing, silk, furs velvet, spices, corn meal, fish meal, potato chips and many others too numerous to mention. An infestation over time can cause serious allergic reactions.
Fleas live by feeding on mammal’s blood. Their feeding bites lead to several problems for pets and humans, including constant itching (pruritis), hair loss (alopecia), hypersensitivity (allergic reaction), and infection and disease transmission.
The sight of cockroaches can cause considerable psychological or emotional distress in some individuals. Disease-causing organisms are carried on the legs and bodies of cockroaches and are deposited on food and utensils as the insects forage. Increased exposure to cockroach allergens is a key factor responsible for the higher prevalence of asthma in urban areas. Most roaches infesting homes feed on starchy items. The German cockroach will destroy books by feeding on them and their bindings. They also seek out starchy food like cereal, sugary substances and meat products and chew on paper products damaging/destroying them in the process. Fecal material from feeding can contaminate food and stain other products.
Silverfish do not sting, bite or cause humans and pets direct damage, but they do cause damage to food in pantries, clothing, wallpaper and books. They feed on anything that is starched base.
The black widow and brown recluse spiders prefer warm, dry climates and undisturbed areas such as basements, closets, woodpiles, attics, or under sinks. When you disturb them, they both can bite with serious repercussions.
Fly infestations are probable sources for transmitted diseases as they fly and walk in and outside your home, contaminating food and surfaces while irritating both you and any animals in the area.
Pill Bugs aka Sow Bug aka Roly-Poly Bug are found in landscape situations where there is an abundance of water and rotting plants. If you find them inside, it is a symptom that you may have a water leak. Outside they may eat tender plants.
Earwigs are scary looking insects and can become pests when they invade homes and outdoor areas in large numbers making the inhabitants uneasy. In their normal position in gardens for example, they are very beneficial in helping to control other pests.
Mosquitoes are one of the most important insect pests that affect the health and well being of humans and domestic animals worldwide. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal for egg production, and they produce a painful bite as they feed. While feeding, they can transmit a number of disease-causing organisms to humans and animals. The diseases these organisms cause includes: encephalitis, dengue fever, filariasis, yellow fever, and malaria. Both encephalitis and dengue (caused by different mosquito born viruses) are potential threats in Arizona.
The organism that causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. In Arizona, the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is the main carrier. In northern Arizona, the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni) also transmits RMSF.
Ticks can feed on mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Most ticks prefer to have a different host animal at each stage of their life, but some, like the brown dog tick, prefer only one host during their entire life cycle. Ticks find their hosts by detecting the breath and body odors of animals, or by sensing body heat, moisture, and vibrations.
Termites consume anything that contains cellulose, including wood, paper, leather, fur, feathers and other natural materials. Books, wallpaper and wood framed houses are favorites for Termites.
Termites are always looking for more munchies. They will eat everything, reception furniture in an office to pretty oak cabinets or furniture and bookcases. A vinyl pool liner that touches the ground is even fair foraging for termites.
Arizona is home to dozens of species of scorpions. not all scorpions have venom that is harmful to humans. The Arizona bark scorpion has a very potent venom. The scorpion sting can be extremely painful with longer lasting effects. Deaths are very rare but people who are prone to have allergic reactions to stings, and those with undeveloped or compromised immune systems (the very young and very old), may experience strong or severe reactions. Small pets may also have adverse reactions.
REPTILE PEST CONTROL
Residential and Commercial Properties can be plagued with these reptiles.
Every year people and animals are bitten by rattlesnakes in Arizona. Rattlesnakes here can be lethal. Typical prey includes birds, rodents, rabbits, lizards and amphibians but anything that encroaches on its space is fair game.
RODENT PEST CONTROL
Residential and Commercial Properties can be plagued with these rodents.
Rats rigorously clean themselves; however, they have no sphincter muscles so they constantly dribble urine. Because of this, they contaminate food sources and traffic areas more than what they eat or where they run. Because they maybe in sewers or other disease prone environments, as they pass through them, they pick up diseases that can infect humans and other mammals.
Gopher holes are landscape nightmares and could cause you to twist an ankle, but the real damage done by gophers is what you can’t see. Gophers also gnaw and damage plastic water lines and lawn sprinkler systems. Their tunnels can divert and carry off irrigation water, which leads to soil erosion. Mounds on lawns interfere with mowing equipment costing time and money.
